Why Does Spiritual Awakening Happen?

More and more people are having spiritual awakenings every day. For some it may come as a complete surprise. For others, it may that they have led a spiritual path their entire lives in hope of one day achieving spiritual awakening. Why exactly does a spiritual awakening happen?

Spiritual awakening happens when you have released the illusion of the self within the mind. From a child it is taught to us that there is separation between the “I” in the mind and reality itself. A spiritual awakening dispels this illusion within the mind and shows us the way.

The Illusion of Self

Almost everyone is taught fairly early on in their lives that there is a “you” and a “me”.

Parents often show their baby a mirror and point at them and say “Look! That’s you!”.

We are not at fault for being under the illusion of self nor is there anyone to blame for this. Almost every human on earth who is not spiritually awake is currently under the illusion of self.

The humor in this situation is that it makes it seem as if it is an open secret. The illusion of self seems so obvious once we have seen through it. The irony in this situation is that to actually see through it requires an immense amount of courage and honesty that not many possess.

Spiritual awakening only happens when you are brave enough to stare deep down inside your soul and admit that you have been led by an illusion your entire life.

To better explain it, attempt to ask the mind this question.

Who am I?

Who is actually the voice within the mind?

The seeing through the illusion of self is not just an agreement with the concept, it is actually an act of seeing through it within the mind. This is where many fail on their journey to spiritual awakening. The mind can easily trick you into thinking you have done so but in fact it is merely just a thought that has convinced you.

You must dig deep within the mind and try to actually find the “I” that the mind is constantly referring to.

What is actually thinking these thoughts? Who is in control of them?

Are you in control of your next thought?

If you aren’t in control, then who is thinking these thoughts within the mind?

Seeing Through The Illusion

Seeing through the illusion of self is the first “peak behind the veil”. A true, permanent spiritual awaken will happen as soon as the illusion of self is seen through.

Many will have mystical experiences that they can not entirely explain and say that “this is a spiritual awakening”. It is important to understand that a real spiritual awakening is something that is felt throughout the entire body. A real awakening will send shockwaves throughout the mind, it will be nothing like you have ever felt before.

The real obstacle many face is that it can be extremely difficult to see through the illusion of self. While this may seem difficult, it is better to understand that this is something that has been in control of us for our entire lives. Imagine it as a sort of parasite that has take control of the mind. The illusion will not step down without a fight.

The best way to continue our search for this illusion is to practice a method called self-inquiry coined by Ramana Maharshi.

Whence does this ā€œIā€ arise?ā€ Seek for it within; it then vanishes. This is the pursuit of Wisdom.

Ramana Maharshi

The purpose of self-inquiry is that the mind is asked over and over “Who am I?” until the illusion is seen through.

This is not an automatic process. The illusion may take weeks or even months to be seen through. Alongside meditation, self inquiry is a true and tested method of achieving spiritual awakening.

This illusion that humanity has been plagued by is the source of suffering. When the mind thinks that it is the one that is in control, that it is separate from life itself, suffering occurs.

When the illusion is finally seen through, spiritual awakening happens naturally.

If you’d like to understand self-inquiry more, this is a great resource on the subject.

Living Through a New Lens

When spiritual awakening happens, the world is viewed through an entire different lens.

Unlike before, thinking that “I am the mind and I am in control” we release these thoughts and are introduced to the immense silence that occupies the mind.

Silence is something that is talked about a lot in the spiritual community. What exactly does silence mean?

In between our thoughts, if paid attention to close enough, it is able to witnessed in real time that there is a “gap” in between thought. This gap is entire silent, this is our true nature. This silence is what envelops the entire universe. It is the core of everything.

When spiritual awakening finally happens, we can finally enjoy living without the constant rambling inside the mind. This allows the mind to function in a more natural way, allowing you to fully utilize the mind as a tool rather than something that is seen as a burden.

If you’d like to check out an article about quieting the mind, I have written one here.

Instead of living life thinking you are in control, instead the mind can now freely adjust to its new reality. This may come as a difficulty at first, it is akin to a baby learning how to take its first steps. You wouldn’t expect a baby to walk right away, would you?

This period takes time to adjust to and the universe will guide you to wherever you need to be. It may seem strange at times but eventually the flow of life will be felt throughout every situation in your life.

Spiritual awakening can also seem amazing at first but do not expect to spiritual awakening to be completely without hardships. When we awaken, we are committing ourselves to let go of everything. That includes your dreams, your hobbies, your self. It doesn’t mean that you won’t be without any dreams or hobbies, it just means that the ego will be ripped to shreds in this process.

When your ego is destroyed, many of your current thoughts about the world and yourself go along with it. It can be a difficult process, so do be aware of what you are getting yourself into.

Is Spiritual Awakening Worth it?

You have not lived fully until you have endured a spiritual awakening.

When you eat a piece of fruit, are you really eating the fruit? Is the fruit being enjoyed without thoughts for what is for dinner or what you will be doing later that day?

Once you have spiritually awoken, the mind quiets drastically. When your mind is quiet, this allows us to live within the present moment fully. The present moment is something that is default by nature but over time humanity has forgotten about its presence.

In today’s world, it seems as if everyone is too preoccupied or busy to care about finding yourself spiritually. If only humanity for a second could feel the presence of silence, the entire world would be turned upside down.

While it may be difficult to make a spiritual awakening happen, it is your duty as a human being to search for it. You owe it to yourself to live a fully developed, rich life. It is not until we have awoken from our dream state that we have lived for the first time.

Being under illusion is really like being asleep. Life is so much deeper than initially thought possible. Spiritual awakening shows us what is important and how to live. Security is not wealth or status, it is a state of mind. Until our first awakening, how would it be possible to truly be secure within our lives?

When you finally open up to the reality of nature beautiful things happen. Life seems different, it almost has a certain flavor. Unlike before where you assumed you had control, you begin the ultimate surrender.

Spiritual awakening at its core is a process of surrendering. First we surrender our “self”, then we surrender everything else. All of our thoughts about life, what we think about ourselves, these things are all taken away from us. It may seem scary and yet it is the most natural thing.

Living an awake life is like living with a blank slate. No burdens, no repetitive thoughts, no ego. Just the flow of the universe.

Spiritual awakening happens only when we surrender the illusion of self. In every day life, it is more normal to think that we are in control and that we are in the driver’s seat. That’s why it is so difficult for many to fully grasp this concept and awaken to the true nature of reality.

If you are in search of spiritual awakening, you have begun the most important part of your life. This is where you finally make a stand and say that you will no longer put up with how you are living currently. It’s important that we find ourselves before it is too late.

There is only one life to live. It is important that we develop fully before we enter the final surrender, death.

Continue to meditate, continue to practice self-inquiry, this is a marathon not a race. Do not be confused by others promising instant enlightenment, this isn’t always the case. For some it may take years and years. The universe has its way of unfolding itself differently for every individual.

In the year 2020, I am seeing more and more people wake up every day. Now that we are in the midst of a worldwide epidemic and tensions are flying, it seems that people have had enough.

You may ask yourself, have you had enough?

Do some soul searching, the universe will be there to catch you.

Spiritual awakening is your destiny. Allow the universe to flow through you. Do not be afraid. Surrender it all. What awaits on the other side is nothing short of a magical journey.
